So in the last few weeks, the tuning activity has certainly picked up. Although I tune a number of street and race cars, the recent flavour has certainly been drift cars. In order to tune a few more of them, I need to head to Napanee.
The day started tuning Matt’s turbo Miata. This setup is based on the Miata 1.6l motor, which other than the turbo remains relatively stock. After a few hours with AEM EMS, this car was revving up nicely and making well over 200rwhp as only 10psi.
This will also be a street driven car so I spent a fair bit of time on driveability, cruise and power regions. Check out the vid below, it looks like it’s doing pretty well on all those fronts.
Next up we started to get to work on Matts’s 1JZ powered MarkII. Over the winter, Matts has converted this 4-door from a potent street car to an all out drift machine….ready to do battle in DMCC this season. It’s now fully caged, and strapped to the freshly rebuilt, cammed 1j is one big single turbo. Tuning this car went well, ending very close to the 500rwhp range. At over 20psi we struggled to get respense from the wastegate so settle with the mid-boost setting of 19psi. Perhaps we’ll tackle 20psi+ in the near future.
Last car on the agenda was Matt’s Cresta, also 1jz powered and singled. This car had some boost control issues in the 20+psi region that ended up gobbling up a lot of time. It then got dark and it just occured to me that I did not end up getting any shots of the car. While letting the car cool and diagnosing the wastegate issues…we got entertained.
Check out www.613driftwerks.ca for more info on these dudes, or watch for them at local DMCC and track events.
Dan I have a few shots of Matts car.
The miata drives great too! Drove it yesterday ~300km and I am averaging LESS THAN 6L/100km! Thats more than 40mpg.
This is combined driving with a few boosted runs
Who needs a smart car now?
Ah sweet. I always love to hear of cars making decent power and still getting freat gas mileage. Happy ripping.
Damn, that soarer sounds good!
Miata rips!
Dan! Wastegate and new intercooler are on the way.
Hopefully I’ll be able to schedule some dyno time once it’s all back together, and win that bet I had with Mats…
Had a blast that day.. That was the first burnout Ive done with my soarer..
Looking forward to a single turbo setup myself in the next yr or so and will for sure be calling U2NDyno for my tuning needs.
ahahha i dunno but i think chris’ burnout made the day…but it was for sure an awesome day..
